How a Bulk Earthworks Project Runs
- Site inspection and quote. We walk the site, review your plans and levels, then give you a clear quote with no hidden extras.
- Planning and set out. We confirm design levels, access, spoil handling and any council or engineering requirements before machinery arrives.
- Clearing and stripping. Vegetation and topsoil are removed and either stockpiled for reuse or carted away.
- Bulk excavation and cut to fill. The site is cut to design levels with material placed as engineered fill on site where possible.
- Compaction and testing. Fill is placed in layers and compacted, and we coordinate with your geotechnical consultant for testing where required.
- Trim and handover. Final levels are trimmed and the site is handed over ready for footings, slabs, paving or the next contractor.

Bulk Civil Earthworks Questions
What is bulk civil earthworks?
Bulk civil earthworks is the large scale movement and shaping of soil and rock to prepare a site for construction. It covers site cuts, cut and fill, bulk excavation, pad formation and compaction. The goal is to take raw ground and bring it to the levels and bearing capacity the design requires.
How much does bulk earthworks cost?
Cost depends on the volume of material, the soil and rock conditions, site access, how far spoil has to travel and whether fill needs to be imported. Some jobs suit a fixed price and others work better on an hourly wet hire rate. We inspect the site and give you a written quote so there are no surprises.
Do you provide compaction testing?
We place and compact fill in layers to specification, and we coordinate with your geotechnical consultant for Level 1 or Level 2 testing where the engineer requires it. If you do not have a consultant we can point you to one we work with regularly.
What size excavators do you have?
Our fleet runs from a 3.5 tonne excavator for tight access work up to a 35 tonne excavator for large scale bulk excavation, along with 5, 14 and 20 tonne machines, an 80HP Positrack and tippers for haulage.
Do you remove the excess soil and spoil?
Yes. We can cart spoil off site, stockpile it on site for reuse as engineered fill, or spread and shape it where the design allows. Carting material off site costs more than reusing it, so we always look at what can be balanced on site first.
How long does a site cut take?
A standard residential house pad is often done in one to three days. A large commercial pad, subdivision or basement dig can run for several weeks. Volume, access, weather and rock all affect the programme, and we give you an indicative timeframe with the quote.
Do you work with builders and developers?
Yes. A large share of our work comes from builders, developers and civil contractors who need an earthworks contractor that turns up and hits programme. We are comfortable working to survey set out, engineering drawings and construction schedules.
Can you work on sloping or difficult sites?
Yes. Sloping blocks, restricted access and rock affected ground are common across the Wide Bay and we deal with them regularly. Machine selection matters on these jobs, which is one reason we run a range of sizes.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Contrex Group holds QBCC licence 15540649 and carries public liability and plant insurance. We can provide certificates of currency on request.
